Advent is a time when the church remembers what it is to be in a dark world, as we look toward the coming light of Christ. The season is one of quiet waiting and joyful expectation.
Sherwood celebrates advent, and later Christmas, in a number of ways, including:
- A "Hanging of the Green" Service on the evening of the First Sunday in Advent (November 29, 2009 at 7 p.m.). This service is a time when we prepare our worship space as a community, and learn the significance behind some of the traditions that make Christmas special for so many of us. Join us for treasured carols, meaningful readings, and then fellowship afterward.
- Lighting a weekly Advent candle which helps us remember the waiting (thereby keeping us from jumping straight into "Christmas")
- The Presbyterian Women's "Joy Gift" offering and program (December 13, 2009 at 6 p.m.)
- Packing bags for our college students
- Participating in the Salvation Army's "Operation Christmas Child"-- where families pack shoeboxes with small goodies, and send them all over the world.
- Our Adult Sunday School Classes adopts a couple of families that might not have much for Christmas, and makes sure the whole family is blessed.
- A Candlelit Christmas Eve Service (December 24, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.)
