Taize Worship

What is Taize?

Taize, is a community in France, which was started by a 25 year old man who had a vision of starting an ecumenical community for contemplation.  One of the central ideas of this community is working toward reconciliation through prayer.

Singing is one of the most important forms of prayer. A few words over and over again reinforce the meditative quality of the prayer. These simple chants also provide a way of praying when one is alone, during the day or at night, or even in the silence of one's heart while one is working.

What is Taize Prayer?

Taize Prayer is kind of a rhythm of prayer more than it is a set way of praying.  The entire service is a prayer, which ideally continues throughout one's journeys through life, so that the prayer itself really has no beginning nor ending.  Songs are repeated over and over again to help us enter into the contemplation of the presence of God. The simple phrases are easily memorized, so that after worshipping in this style for a time, books are unnecessary.

Why Taize?

We live in a world that puts increasing pressure on us to be more and do more and have more.  Taize worship helps us keep those worldly demands in check by offering us the gift of silence and space.  As we allow ourselves to be still, we often find out just how thirsty for God we've been.

What Can I Expect?

A typical Taize service includes several scripture readings, prayers, songs, and periods of silence. Usually, Taize services are very simple to really allow the worshipper a space in which to converse with God. The visual centerpiece will typically include candles, and symbols of Christianity like the cross or cup and plate.  If Taize is new to you, don't worry about knowing what to do next--simply allow yourself to worship as The Spirit leads you.  Taize is much more of an "individual" style of worship than it is a "communal" worship service.  It's more about one person worshipping in the way that is most comfortable for them, than it is about everyone doing the same thing and the same time.

An important part of the Taize experience is the singing of simple meditative songs that were developed for the prayer service.
