When the church celebrates Pentecost, it remembers the time that the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, and made them a community. (Acts 2) Pentecost, which occurs 50 days after Easter, is traditionally remembered as the birthday of the church. Today, Pentecost is celebrated as a time of renewed committment within the church. (If you'd like to know what Presbyterians believe about the Holy Spirit, you can find more information here: http://www.pcusa.org/101/101-holy.htm)
Sherwood celebrates this time, not as a day, but as a season. Our sanctuary will be adorned with red (which is the liturgical color set aside for this special season), and will remain that way for five Sundays (May 23-June 27, 2010) Additionally, our members are asked to spend those five weeks in daily prayer for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our church and community.
